Darts star van Gerwen announces sporting break after marriage break: "I'm sorry"

Privately, difficult times for darts star Michael van Gerwen: On social media, the three-time world champion announces a break - and asks for understanding from his fans.
Three-time darts world champion Michael van Gerwen has separated from his wife Daphne and announced a sporting hiatus. "It is with great regret that I would like to announce that Daphne and I have decided to end our relationship," the Dutchman announced on Instagram.
Van Gerwen and his wife Daphne married in 2014 and have two children together, a daughter and a son.
Due to the difficult personal situation, the 36-year-old is taking a break from sports. He has withdrawn from upcoming tournaments, van Gerwen wrote. "I'm sorry to disappoint my fans, but I think they will understand my decision."
Van Gerwen was originally scheduled to participate in the Elten Safety Shoes Dutch Darts Championship this weekend. The Dutchman won the PDC World Championship in 2014, 2017, and 2019, but this year he lost in the final to England's Luke Littler.
